Abstract Details
Purpose:
To present and analyze results of secondary intraocular lens (IOL) implantation in children with posttraumatic aphakia
Setting:
Kharkov Medical Academy of Postgraduate Education, Ophthalmology Department, Ukraine
Methods:
7 eyes of 7 children aged from 9 to 18 years with posttraumatic aphakia had secondary posterior chamber IOL implantations. An implantation procedure depended on localization and size of corneal scars, endothelial cells deficite, anterior and posterior sinechies, condition of iris and form of pupil, tears of posterior capsule, condition of vitreous and retina. Visometry, tonometry, biomicroscopy, endothelial cells microscopy, ultrasound of eye, gonioscopy, optical coherence retinal tomography (OCT) were evaluated. We used Acrysof (Alcon) IOLs: with intracapsular fixation (3 eyes) and IOL fixation to iris (4 eyes).
Results:
: None of our patients with pseudophakic eye had decrease of vision after the operation. In long term follow-up the visual acuity in children had an average increase from 0,3(6/20) to 0,7 (6/8). The binocular vision was restored in 80% of cases. Color vision became better in all cases.
Conclusions:
In spite of technical complexity the secondary IOL implantation in children allows to achieve a high functional results: visual acuity increase, color vision improvement, binocular vision restoration. Two years data on 7 eyes showed significant visual improvement in all cases.
