Comparison of two different techniques for the calculation of toric intraocular lenses: online calculator vs iTrace

Purpose:
The purpose of this study was to compare two different techniques for the calculation of toric intraocular lenses (tIOL): Online calculator vs. iTrace.
Setting:
Department of Ophthalmology, Charit�Ã�© Campus Virchow - Medical University Berlin, Germany
Methods:
A total of 30 eyes of 23 patients were enrolled in this prospective, single-centered study. The cataract patients underwent phacoemulsification with implantation of a toric intraocular lens (iSert 351T3-9, Hoya, Tokio, Japan). The patients were randomly split into two groups. For 15 eyes the tIOLs were calculated with the online toric calculator from Hoya. For the other 15 eyes the iTrace (Tracey Technologies, Houston, Tx, USA) with the integrated toric calculator was used to determine the appropriate tIOLs. Postoperative evaluations were performed after 1 day, 1 week, 1 month, 3 months and 6 months.
Results:
After six months the online calculator group showed an uncorrected visual acuity at far distance of 1.0 �Â�± 0.2 decimal, in comparison to 1.1 �Â�± 0.12 decimal in the iTrace group. The preoperative astigmatism was reduced from 2.50 Diopters (D) �Â�± 1.37 D to 0.75 D �Â�± 0.24 D in the online calculator group, compared to 2.64 D �Â�± 1.38 D to 0.64 D �Â�± 0.33 D in the iTrace group. Regarding the difference between the calculated and the actual toric axis, the values found were 3.6 degrees in the online calculator group and 3.8 degrees in the iTrace group.
Conclusions:
The tIOL calculation with iTrace showed similarly good results as the conventional procedure with the online toric calculator. Considering that the iTrace produces a corneal topography and therefore avoids transmission errors, the iTrace seems to improve quality assurance.
