Cataract incidence 10 years after ICL implantation

Abstract Details

Purpose:

From 1998 to 2005 implantable contact lenses (ICL, type V4) where used to correct high myopia in the Department of Ophthalmology, Medical University Vienna. This is a sulcus fixated posterior chamber lenses placed between the crystalline lens and the rear surface of the iris. In a retrospective analysis the cataract incidence has been evaluated.

Department of Ophthalmology and Optometry, Medical University Vienna

Methods:

In 86 eyes after an ICL implantation the follow-up of 10 year with annual examinations where retrospectively analysed. The incidence of anterior subcapsular lens opacification where evaluated with the slit lamp in mydriasis. The determination of the cataract incidence was according to the number of the cataract operations that had been fulfilled. The vaulting, the distance between the posterior surface of the ICL and the anterior surface of the crystalline lens, had been also determined.

Results:

84 eyes could be included for this analysis. Within the follow up time of 10 years 27% of the eyes exhibit an anterior subcapsular lens opacification. In 20, 2 % of all cases a cataract operation had been done in the first 10 postoperative years. A small vaulting as well as older age where identified as risk factors to develop a cataract.

Conclusions:

Long term results for the ICL V4 model showed a high rate of anterior subcapsular lens opasification as well as a high cataract incidence in myopic eye.
