Correlation between the axial length and the anterior chamber depth in normal, myopic and hyperopic eyes

Abstract Details
Purpose:
To investigate the correlation between the axial length (AL) and the anterior chamber depth (ACD) in normal, myopic and hyperopic eyes.
Setting:
In University Eye Hospital ��Prof. Pashev��, Sofia, Bulgaria we are performing an ongoing prospective study in phakic eyes.
Methods:
Up to now 150 phakic eyes were measured using the Zeiss IOL Master 500. We divided the eyes according to their AL in three groups: eyes with normal AL between 22 and 24 mm, shorter than 22 mm and longer than 24 mm. The third and fourth generation IOL calculation formulae are using the ACD in order to determine the effective lens positioning. Therefore correlation between the AL and the ACD is crucial for the refractive outcome after phacoemulsification.
Results:
We used a statistical correlation analysis for our study. In eyes with normal AL the mean ACD was 2.99 mm �Â�± 0.43 mm. In eyes with AL longer than 24 mm the mean ACD was 3.48 mm �Â�± 0.7 mm, whereas in eyes shorter than 22 mm the mean ACD was 2.71 mm �Â�± 0.95 mm.
Conclusions:
We found a stronger correlation between the AL and the ACD in normal and long eyes. Eyes shorter than 22 mm have a significant deviation ranging from 2.18 up to 3.58 mm. In short eyes there is not a reliable correlation between the AL and the ACD. Therefore in short eyes it is more difficult to achieve emmetropia �Â�±0,5 D after phacoemulsification.
