Abstract Details
Purpose:
To compare change of corneal epithelial thickness and stromal thickness after cataract surgery and to investigate difference of remodeling trend of corneal epithelium and stroma
Setting:
Wonju Severance Christian Hospital, Wonju-si, Gangwon-do, South Korea
Methods:
This study compared topographic values of corneal epithelial thickness (CET) and stromal thickness (ST) in 40 eyes underwent cataract surgery. Epithelial thickness mapping was obtained using a spectral-domain optical coherence tomography before surgery, 3 days, 7 days and 1 month after surgery.
Results:
The mean preoperative CET of center (2 mm in diameter), paracenter (2-5 mm), mid-periphery (5-6 mm) were 52.13Â±3.41Âµm, 50.42Â±2.97Âµm and 49.12Â±3.05 Âµm. CET of center changed to 51.54Â±4.59Âµm at 3 days, 52.93Â±4.78Âµm at 7 days, 51.03Â±3.63Âµm at 1 month postoperatively. Comparing to preoperative values, CET was significantly different only at 1 month postoperatively in paracenter and mid-periphery zone. But ST was significantly different from 3 days to 1 month postoperatively in central 6 mm diameter zone.
Conclusions:
Topographic remodeling patterns are different between corneal epithelium and stroma after cataract surgery. Corneal stromal thickness increased just after surgery, but compensative change of corneal epithelium started between 7 days and 1 month after cataract surgery.
