Abstract Details

Purpose:

The aim of this study was to analyze corneal subbasal nerve fiber changes following phacoemulsification of cataract with intraocular lens insertion using in vivo confocal microscopy (IVCM).

Setting:

Hacettepe University School of Medicine, Department of Ophthalmology

Methods:

Twenty corneas of patients with cataract undergoing phacoemulsification with intraocular lens insertion were included in this prospective study. Subbasal nerve plexus density was quantitatively analyzed using corneal IVCM preoperatively and 6-month postoperatively. Studentâ€™s t-test and Wilcoxon Signed Ranks Test were used for statistical evaluations.

Results:

The mean age of twenty patients with cataract was 67.7 Â± 7.7 years (between 49-77 y; 8M and 12F). There were no significant differences in the number of subbasal long nerve fibers (p=0.132), entire subbasal nerves (p=0.934), nerve fiber density (p=0.554), as well as tortuocity (p=0.593) between preoperatively and 6-month postoperatively.

Conclusions:

There were no changes in corneal subbasal nerve plexus after phacoemulsification in patients with cataract.
