Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate choroidal thickness (CT) before and 1 month after uncomplicated phacoemulsification cataract surgery using swept-source optical coherence tomography (SS-OCT).

Setting:

A prospective clinical study was performed at the Department of Ophthalmology of the Hospital of Lithuanian University of Health Sciences, Kaunas Clinics.

Methods:

15 eyes of 15 patients (mean age 70.13Â±8.58 years) with senile cataract received uncomplicated phacoemulsiï¬cation and intraocular lens implantation. CT measurements were performed preoperatively (P) and 1 month (M1) after surgery using 1050 nm DRI Triton SS-OCT (Topcon, Tokyo, Japan). The 9 automatically calculated ETDRS grid subfields were assessed: the CT in the central ring (C), nasal inner (NI) region, superior inner (SI) region, temporal inner (TI) region, inferior inner (II) region, nasal outer (NO) region, superior outer (SO) region, temporal outer (TO) region, and inferior outer (IO) region. Measurements were performed at the same time 1-2 PM.

Results:

Mean CT difference (CT after surgery â€“ CT before surgery) was 1.69Â±24.75 in C, 3.94Â±15.91 in NI, 3.31Â±10.31 in NO, 20.37Â±25.53 in TI, 5.00Â±14.43 in TO, -0.69Â±23.48 in SI, 4.94Â±15.39 in SO, 6.06Â±13.50 in II and 7.5Â±12.35 in IO (expressed in Âµm) regions (p > 0.05).

Conclusions:

There was no statistically significant difference comparing CT before and 1 month after uncomplicated phacoemulsification cataract surgery in various regions. Further investigations should be continued to confirm and better clarify our findings.
