Abstract Details
Purpose:
To establish visual outcomes and anatomical changes following cataract surgery in patients receiving anti-VEGF injections for nAMD.
Setting:
The study was undertaken across East Sussex Healthcare NHS Trust, at Eastbourne District General Hospital and Conquest Hospital.
Methods:
Retrospective study of 10 male and 11 female patients with active nAMD (mean age 84.7 years). Electronic records and OCT were used to collect data on best corrected visual acuity (BCVA), central retinal thickness (CRT) and macula volume (MV).
Results:
Mean BCVA significantly improved immediately post-operatively LogMar 0.84 Â± 0.33 to 0.55 Â± 0.26, (P = 0.003) and the improvement was maintained at one year after surgery 0.37 Â± 0.24, (P = 0.023). Mean CRT increased immediately post-operatively from 217um Â± 77 to 229um Â± 50, (P = 0.5) and remained increased at one year post surgery 232.7 Â± 75.1 (P = 0.8). Mean MV also increased immediately post-operatively from 8.3um3 Â± 1.6 to 8.9um3 Â± 1.1, (P = 0.1) with a minimal increase one year 9.0 um3 Â± 1.2, (P = 0.8).
Conclusions:
At one year the BCVA demonstrated a significant improvement in VA following phacoemulsification in this group of patients. There is also a tendency for the CRT and MV to increase though these changes were not significant.
