Follow-up of IOP after phacoemulsification in non-glaucomatous patients

Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate the change in intraocular pressure (IOP) after cataract phacoemulsification in patients with normal IOP before surgery.

Setting:

The present study was designed as a prospective study of one year follow-up of patients with healthy eyes who needed cataract surgery.

Methods:

IOP values of 20 eyes of 20 non-glaucomatous patients who underwent phacoemulsification without complications were evaluated with Goldmann tonometry before and 1, 6 and 12 months after the surgical procedure. All surgeries were performed by the same surgeon and no topical hypotensive medications were used in any patient before and after the phacoemulsification.

Results:

Preoperative IOP was 17.75 � 3.014 mmHg (range 12 up to 21 mmHg). Postoperative IOP values were 17.8 � 2.29 mmHg, 17.0 � 2.44 mmHg and 17.05�2.39 mmHg 1, 6 and 12 months after surgery. After phacoemulsification, the IOP values in all patients did not change significantly, not even a slight decrease, as it has been shown in numerous studies.

Conclusions:

Even recent studies suggest that lens phacoemulsification may be useful to decrease IOP, our study did not prove any IOP reduction in our patients.
