The effect of phacoemulsification surgery on intraocular pressure and anterior segment anatomy of patients with cataract and ocular hypertension

Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate the effect of phacoemulsification surgery on intraocular pressure (IOP), anterior chamber depth (ACD), iridocorneal angle (ICA) and central corneal thickness (CCT) of the patients with ocular hypertension (OHT).

Setting:

Turkish Red Crescent Hospital, Ophthalmology Clinics, Konya, Turkey

Methods:

Retrospectively we examined 28 eyes of 28 patients with cataract and ocular hypertension, who have undergone phacoemulsicification and intraocular lens(IOL) implantation. Preoperative and postoperative 1st week, 1st month, 3rd month, 6th month, 1st year and 2nd year IOP, ACD, ICA and CCT measurements were taken.

Results:

The decrease in IOP of 1st week, 1st , 3rd and 6th month and 1st year was statistically significant but that of 2nd year was not significant. ,The increase in ACD of 1st week, 1st, 3rd and 6th month and 1st year was significant but that of 2nd year was not. The increase in ICA of 1st week, 1st, 3rd and 6th month and 1st year was significant but that of 2nd year was not. Increase in CCT of 1st week and 1st month was significant but that of 3rd month, 6th month, 1st year and 2nd year were not.

Conclusions:

Phacoemulsification surgery decreases IOP and increases ACD and ICA in the short-term. But in the long-term it doesn't cause any significant changes.
