Visual and refractive outcomes following implantation of a small aperture IOL: a single center prospective study

Abstract Details

Purpose:

To report the visual and refractive outcomes following implantation of a small aperture, extended depth of focus intraocular lens (IOL) in the non-dominant eye of subjects undergoing refractive lens exchange.

Setting:

University Hospital Ayr, Ayr, Scotland, United Kingdom

Methods:

10 eyes of 10 subjects underwent mono ocular implantation of a small aperture IOL in the non-dominant eye. The dominant eye was implanted with an aspheric monofocal IOL planned for emmetropia. The surgical procedure was performed by a single surgeon under topical anaesthesia. Post operatively all subjects were examined at day one, week one, 1 month, 3 months and six monthly thereafter. Monocular and binocular uncorrected distance (UCDVA), intermediate (UCIVA) and near (UCNVA) were recorded.

Results:

There were no intraoperative or postoperative complications. At 4 weeks postoperatively the mean UCDVA in the eye with monofocal IOL and small aperture IOL was was 6/6 unaided and 6/9 respectively. The mean UCIVA and UCNVA in the non-dominant eye with the small aperture IOL was 6/9, 612 respectively.

Conclusions:

Implantation of a small aperture IOL in the non-dominant eye provides uninterrupted extended depth of focus resulting in seamless distance, intermediate and near vision. With the dominant eye aimed for emmetropia, subjects seems to enjoy good unaided binocular distance, intermediate and near vision with very high levels of patient satisfaction.
