Abstract Details
Purpose:
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of topical 1% cyclopentolate hydrochloride eye drops on AL-Scan biometry in children.
Setting:
Karadeniz Technical University, Faculty of Medicine, Department of Ophthalmology, Trabzon, Turkey.
Methods:
Sixty-four eyes of 32 children, 17 female, were included in this study. Optic biometric measurements obtained by the using the AL-Scan optical biometer were performed in all eyes before and 45 minutes after application of 1% cyclopentolate hydrochloride. The following measurements were carried out during both measurement sessions: White-to-white corneal diameter(WTW), keratometry readings(K1, K2), central corneal thickness(CCT), anterior chamber depth(ACD), pupil size(PS), axial length(AL), and IOL power calculations were subsequently performed for the same brand IOLs (Sensar AR40e IOL) using two different calculation formulae. The results obtained from before and after 1% cyclopentolate hydrochloride application periods were then compared statistically.
Results:
Mean age of the participants was 10.78Â±3.21. The average measured values in the first and second (in brackets) sessions in the study were as follows: WTW=12.1Â±0.43 (12.1Â±0.41)mm, K1=43.44Â±1.36 (43.41Â±1.4)D, K2=44.6Â±1.55 (44.61Â±1.61)D, CCT=553.08Â±34.21 (552.53Â±34.71)microns, ACD=3.74Â±0.25 (3.89Â±0.22)mm, PS=5.7Â±0.82 (7.87Â±0.7)mm, AL=22.94Â±1.06 (22.99Â±1.09)mm; IOL power for Haigis formula=22.48Â±3.14 (22.57Â±3.25)D, IOL power for SRK/T formula=22.13Â±3.26 (22.27Â±3.1)D. In all eyes, measurements between the two sessions were significantly different for the values of ACD and PS (p<0.05 for both comparisons), whereas no statistical difference was found for the WTW, keratometry (K1,K2), CCT, AL, and calculated IOL power values with the both calculation formulae (p>0.05 for all comparisons).
Conclusions:
Topically applied 1% cyclopentolate hydrochloride caused an increase in the ACD and PS values. However, it had no significant effect on the WTW, keratometry readings, CCT, AL, and IOL power measurements. It is necessary to consider these effects on measurements taken with an AL-Scan biometer in children in whom 1% cyclopentolate hydrochloride has been applied.
