Abstract Details
Purpose:
To design the microsurgical cannula for anterior capsule staining in case of an absent or reduced retinal reflex. Demonstrate the efficacy of the new designed cannula
Setting:
S. Fyodorov Eye Microsurgery State Institution, Moscow, Russia
Methods:
Prospective interventional study.
The disposable cannula for anterior segment is composed of the two parts with an angle of 120 degrees and the peripheral part is perforated with three holes located downwards. The end of the cannula is sealed.
5 patients with mature cataracts underwent conventional cataract surgery with the anterior capsular staining. After clear corneal incisions were performed the anterior chamber was maintained with an ophthalmic viscosurgical device (OVD) and the new designed cannula was applied for anterior capsular staining. Additional OVD was injected into the anterior chamber to distribute the dye closer to the capsule.
Results:
In all cases there were no need for additional manipulations for capsule staining. During all steps of continuous curvilinear capsulorhexis the anterior capsule margin was well visualized.
Conclusions:
Novel design of the cannula showed an advanced ergonomics for anterior capsule staining.
