Acute serous macular detachment and edema after uncomplicated phacoemulsification

Abstract Details

Purpose:

To report a case of early serous macular detachment and edema after uncomplicated phacoemulsification surgery

Setting:

Clinical Department of Ophthalmology, School of Medicine and Division of Dentistry in Zabrze, Medical University of Silesia in Katowice, Poland

Methods:

A 46-year old patient, 10 years after ocular blunt injury with documented preoperative normal retinal morphology by swept source optical coherence tompgraphy developed an acute serous macular detachment and edema on the first postoperative day after 2,6 mm uncomplicated phacoemulsification surgery with intraocular posterior capsule acrylic lens implantation. Visual acuity, refractive error, wide field ophthalmoscopy and angiography, trend with time analysis by swept source OCT was performed.

Results:

The central macular retinal thickness increased to 697 �Â�µm on the first postoperative day. After treatment with oral acetazolamid, nimesulidum and polphilin, at 10 days, intraretinal and subretinal fluid were fully reabsorbed and BCVA improved to 0,8. The central retinal thickness was 189 �Â�µm. In the following 6 months, no recurrence of macular detachment or edema was observed.

Conclusions:

Acute serous macular detachment and edema should be considered in cases of low visual acuity during the early postoperative period after uncomplicated phacoemulsification surgery.
