Modified suture fixation technique for scleral fixated intraocular lenses: outcomes of 120 cases

Abstract Details

Purpose:

To demonstrate a modified suture fixation technique for scleral fixated intraocular lenses (SFIOL) in eyes with no or insufficient capsular support and compare the results of primary and secondary surgeries.

Setting:

Gaziantep University Hospital, Ophthalmology Department, Gaziantep, Turkey

Methods:

We analyzed retrospectively 120 patients who underwent primary or secondary SFIOL implantation using a modified suture fixation technique . This technique didn�â�€�™t require to create a scleral flep or tunnel. We buried the knot directly into the scleral opening which was formed by curved-needle of the PC-9 closed loop suture and slightly enlarged by the tip of a 20-gauge blade. Visual outcomes and complications were evaluated. A video will be demonstrated during the presentation.

Results:

We performed 45 primary and 75 secondary SFIOL implantations. Preoperative mean LogMAR visual acuity were 1,12�Â�±0,41 in primary group and 1,13�Â�±0,30 in secondary group, respectively. Postoperative mean LogMAR visual acuity were 0,57�Â�±0,32 in primary group and 0,64�Â�±0,34 in secondary group. In early postoperative period; complications occurred in 20 (44,4%) eyes in primary group and in 14 (18,7%) eyes in secondary group. Late postoperative complications were observed in 11 (24,4%) eyes and 10 (13,3%) eyes in primary and secondary group, respectively. There wasn't any statistically significiant difference between groups regarding the incidence of late postoperative complications.

Conclusions:

Our modified suture fixation technique appears to display a comparable effectiveness and safety compared to existing scleral-fixation techniques.
