Abstract Details

Purpose:

To assess the incidence, risk factors and clinical courses of cystic macular lesions (CMLs) after uncomplicated phacoemulsification

Setting:

Univerisity hopital setting, retrospective study

Methods:

This retrospective chart review was conducted. Patientsâ€™ demographic data, preoperative biometric parameters, and postoperative surgical outcomes were recorded to evaluate risk factors for CMLs.CMLs were classified into two categories; cysttic macular edema (CME) and microcystic macular edema (MME).

Results:

The dataset consisted of 316 patients (mean age 67.52 Â± 12.95, range 42-87) who was performed uncomplicated, standard phacoemulsification. The incidence of CMLs was significantly lower in topical NSAIDs treated patients as compared to those without topical NSAIDs medication. A history of diabetic retinopathy (OR, 3.47; 95% CI, 1.24-9.91), hypertension (OR, 3.71; 95% CI, 1.19-11.5), epiretinal membrane (OR, 5.63; 95% CI, 1.19-26.4) , uveitis (OR, 11.7; 95% CI, 1.79-76.4), glaucoma (OR, 4.16; 95% CI, 1.12-15.4), and vascular occlusion (OR, 5.03; 95% CI, 0.90-28.0) were associated with risk of CMLs.

Conclusions:

This study showed wide clinical spectrum of CMLs. we could observe not only CME, but MME, which has not included in conventional definitions of pseudophakic CME.
