Abstract Details
Purpose:
The purpose of this case report is to present and discuss a new iris expansion device for obtaining proper and stable pupil dilation in patients with iris Coloboma during cataract surgery.
Setting:
Clinica de Olhos do Hospital Santa Casa de Belo Horizonte
Methods:
This is a photo documented cataract surgery performed in a patient with Iris Coloboma performed using a new disposable small-pupil expansion device named Canabravas Ring CR ring (AJL Ophthalmic SPAIN).
Results:
The CR ring is a circular device designed as a 300 degree arch whit a 60 degree open part. During the surgery it was easily placed and removed and fitted perfectly on the incomplete pupil, keeping a 6.3 mm stable dilation throughout the procedure. The anterior capsule was friable and had some fibrotic tissue and so was necessary the placement of an endocapsular tension ring to obtain the proper capsule support. The IOL was placed in-the-bag and, after removing the expansion ring, the pupiloplasty has been performed.
Conclusions:
The Coloboma iris are challenging for the cataract surgeon as the majority of the existent pupil expander devices cant be proper placed on the cases. We showed a new an option both in coloboma iris and in post traumatic or post surgical sectorial iris lesions. Larger studies involving eyes with similar pathologies are required in order to provide additional support for the observations made.
