Comparison of the 5-year study results of orthokeratology between high and low baseline myopia

Abstract Details

Purpose:

From 2009 to 2014, post marketing surveillance (PMS) of α Ortho-K orthokeratology lens (Alpha Corporation) was conducted in Japan. In this study, we compared the PMS results (efficacy/safety) for 5 years between patients with high and low baseline myopia.

Kakita Eye Clinic, Chiba, Japan

Methods:

The data of 388 patients (746 eyes) were analyzed. Based on the baseline refraction, all eyes were divided into the 2 groups. “High baseline myopia” was defined as spherical equivalent refractive error < -4.00 D at baseline, and “low baseline myopia” was defined as spherical equivalent refractive error ≥ -4.00 D at baseline. The time course of changes in spherical equivalent refractive error, logMAR visual acuity (VA), subjective astigmatism (SA), corneal endothelial cell density (ECD), corneal thickness (CT), intraocular pressure (IOP) were compared between the 2 groups. Slit-lamp findings were also compared in terms of the frequency and severity.

Results:

Regarding SA, the low baseline myopia group tended to have a lower power of astigmatism than the high baseline myopia group. A significant difference in VA was found between the 2 groups. There was no significant time course of changes in ECD in both groups. As for CT and IOP, no significant difference was found between the 2 groups. Overall, the low baseline myopia group showed better efficacy than the high baseline myopia group. No significant difference was found on safety between the 2 groups, however, higher occurrence rate of corneal staining was found in the high baseline myopia group.

Conclusions:

In clinical practice of orthokeratology, eyes with low baseline myopia showed better clinical course in terms of both efficacy and safety than eyes with high baseline myopia.
