Do LASIK and SMILE change anterior and posterior corneal curvature (CC) in similar fashion? A contralateral eye study

Abstract Details

Purpose:

To compare changes in anterior (AC) and posterior (PC) corneal power after LASIK vs. SMILE.

Setting:

LaserVision.gr Clinical and Research Eye Institute, Athens, Greece

Methods:

In 22 consecutive myopic patients: one eye randomized, had LASIK; the contralateral SMILE. We evaluated peri-operatively: Refraction, CDVA, UDVA, keratometry: AC, PC with Scheimpflug tomography and also anterior segment OCT
.

Results:

LASIK vs. Smile respectively in diopters (D): AC change in low myopia (<5D) 49.57±2.63D to 45.74±3.04D, and 50.36±2.36D to 46.46±2.03D; in high myopia (5 to 10 D) 50.16±1.66 D to 42.29±1.71 D and 50.41±1.76D to 44.15±2.55D. PC change in <5D, from -6.15±0.40D to -6.16±0.37D and -6.20±0.34D to -6.28±0.34D, while in 5 to 10D from -6.21±0.22D to -6.25±0.23D, and -6.25±0.23 D to -6.30±0.29 D.

Conclusions:

Smile affects AC more than LASIK, when adjusted for myopic power corrected in <5D. PC changes were similar. LASIK vs. Smile change CC differently, possibly through different biomechanical and/or epithelial remodeling changes.
