Changes in ocular parameters before and after treatment in diabetic patients with insulin therapy

Abstract Details

Purpose:

We aimed to evaluate the effect of insulin therapy on ocular parameters.

Setting:

Yuzuncu Yil University

Methods:

The study was performed prospectively in patients diagnosed with diabetes mellitus in ophthalmology clinic of Yuzuncu Yil University. 52 eyes of 26 patients were included in the study. The age and sex of the patients were recorded. Autorefractometry measurements (ORM), intraocular pressure (IOP), anterior and posterior segment examinations were performed. Axial length (AL), anterior chamber depth (ACD), lens thickness (LT) and central corneal thickness (CCT) were measured before and 3 months after treatment in patients with insulin treatment due to diabetes mellitus. SPSS 14.0 statistical program was used for data analysis of the patients.

Results:

The mean age of the patients was 53.46±11.83 (32-73) years.16 of the patients were male (61.5%) and 10 were female (38.5%). Pre and post-treatment mean IOP, ORM, AL, ACD, LT was 14.96±2.52 mmHg and 14.92±2.58 mmHg (p=0.93), 0.05±0.99 D and -0.03±0.92 D (p=0.26), 23.49±0.74 mm and 23.49±0.73 mm (p=0.85), 3.27±0.39 mm and 3.27±0.36 mm (p=0.74), 4.27±0.32 mm and 4.29±0.31 mm (p=0.12) respectively. The mean CCT was 524.6±37.6 μm before treatment, it was 520.81±41.08 μm after treatment. The difference between the pachymetric changes was statistically significant (p=0.017).

Conclusions:

We consider that the significant decrease in mean CCT in our study may be an indirect consequence of the blood sugar-reducing effect of insulin. Although there is no significant change in other parameters, long-term studies are needed to get a better idea of this topic.
