Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate the influence of size and shape of Nd :YAG capsulotomy on visual acuity and refraction.

Setting:

Turkish Red Crescent Hospital, Ophthalmology Clinics, Konya, Turkey

Methods:

85 eyes of 67 patients with PCO, who had undergone Nd:YAG posterior capsulotomy between November 2011 and July 2012, were evaluated retrospectively. Their mean age was 57,57±9,26(SD)(38-75). The mean interval between operation and Nd:YAG laser capsulotomy was 26,09±7,08(SD)(10-38) months. Patients were divided into 4 groups according to the shape and size of the capsulotomy. Group1 included patients with cruciate shape and size equal to or smaller than 3,5mm capsulotomy opening, Group2 cruciate shape and size bigger then 3,5mm, Group3, circular shape and size equal to or smaller than 3,5mm and Group4, circular shape and size bigger than 3,5mm.

Results:

The mean amount of energy used (p<0,001) and shoots applied (p<0,001) were significantly higher in the fourth group. There was no statistical difference among the groups in terms of SE (p=0,011), BCVA (p=0,108) and IOP (p=0,125). The number of patients with floating body symptomps in the fourth group was significantly higher (p=0,001). SE and IOP after the procedure was not statistically different from those before the procedure (p=0,074, p=0,856) in all groups. BCVA after the procedure was significantly higher than the BCVA before the procedure (p<0,001) in all groups.

Conclusions:

For minimum complications and maximum visual functions, the optimal capsulotomy size should be equal to or larger than the pupil in scotopic conditions and be within the borders of the IOL. And the preference of cruciate shape is better due to less energy usage and thus less copmlications.
