Abstract Details

Purpose:

In this project we present and show the value of the exctraordinary work of Augustus Gottlieb Richter (1742-1812), one of the most famous German surgeons and ophthalmologists of the end of 18th and start of19th century.

Setting:

A' Ophthalmologic Clinic, AHEPA Hospital, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece

Methods:

In this presentation we are dealing with the English edition (1791) of the famous work of Augustus Gottlieb Richter. which was a milestone in the course of Surgery and Ophthalmology, and the transition of these areas by itinerant empirical exercise in documented scientific position in Medical science. As an exceptional work is considered a treatise entitled, 'Abhandlung von der Ausziehung des grauen Stars (Gottingen, 1773) which was translated into English in 1791 under the title ' A Treatise on the Extraction of the Cataract '.

Results:

He worked in Gottingen where he tried to promote and simplify the surgical methods of his time and clearly he earned the designation of a ‘reformer of the German Surgery' It is him who got the surgery of cataract extraction (acc. Daviel, 1748) from the hands of itinerant empirical therapists and turned it into an important part of the practice of the qualified surgical trainees.

Conclusions:

Richter's work was a milestone in the course of Surgery and Ophthalmology, and the transition of these areas by itinerant empirical profession to a documented scientific highly expertised field in Medical science.
