Abstract Details

Purpose:

Glutathione transferases (GSTs), enzymes expressed in various ocular structures have important role in the detoxification of xenobiotics and oxidative damage defense. In humans, GSTT1 and GSTM1 deletion polymorphisms are associated with a variety of pathologic processes including certain ophthalmologic diseases.

Setting:

1University Eye Clinic, Medical Center Zvezdara, D. Tucovica 161, Belgrade, Serbia 2 Faculty of Special Education and Rehabiltation, University of Belgrade, Belgrade, Serbia 3Institute of Medical and Clinical Biochemistry, Faculty of Medicine, University of Belgrade, Belgrade, Serbia

Methods:

Methods: A case-control study was carried out consisting of 102 patients with POAG and 138 age and gender-matched healthy controls. GSTM1 and GSTT1 deletion polymorphisms were determined by a multiplex polymerase chain reaction (PCR).

Results:

Results: The carriers of GSTT1 active genotype were at increased risk for the development of primary open angle glaucoma (OR=2.08, 95% CI=1.06-4.08, p=0.032). No association was found between GSTM1 polymorphism and the risk for the development of POAG. The risk for primary open angle glaucoma also increased significantly in subjects carriers of a combination of GSTT1 active and GSTM1 null genotype (OR=4.61, 95% CI=1.25-16.94, p=0.021).

Conclusions:

Conclusions: GSTT1 active genotype is associated with an increased risk for primary open angle glaucoma, and this effect is even more pronounced in combination with GSTM1 null genotype.
