Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate and compare quality of life of middle-aged patients with different refractive errors using McGill Quality of Life Questionnaire.

Setting:

The Hospital of Lithuanian University of Health Sciences, Kaunas clinics, Department of Ophthalmology.

Methods:

438 middle-aged (48-49 years old) participants were examined at polyclinic of the eye disease. Visual acuity was measured using Snellen chart, refraction test was performed with NIDEK Tonoref II auto refractometer, McGill Quality of Life Questionnaire was administered. Persons were divided into 7 groups by refraction errors: emmetropia, myopia (mild, moderate and high) and hyperopia (mild, moderate and high). Participants with anisometropia were excluded. Quality of life aspects were compared between groups.

Results:

Refractive errors groups: emmetropia - 28.80%, myopia: mild - 28.34%, moderate –5.99%, high - 1.10%, hyperopia: mild – 28.57%, moderate - 6.68%, high - 0.52%. Participants with emmetropia felt physically better than with mild myopia (7.06 ± 2.89 vs 6.41 ±2.89; p=0.04). Participants with mild myopia were more likely to be nervous and worried than with emmetropia (2.56 ± 2.48 vs 1.91 ± 1.86, p=0.023) and mild hyperopia (1.91 ± 2.44; p=0.01). Participants with mild myopia thought their life was more purposeful and meaningful than with mild hyperopia (7.45 ±2.30 vs 6.78 ±2.9; p=0.029).

Conclusions:

Participants with emmetropia felt physically better than with mild myopia. Participants with mild myopia were more likely to be nervous and worried than with emmetropia and mild hyperopia. Participants with mild myopia thought their life was more purposeful and meaningful than with mild hyperopia.
