Abstract Details

Purpose:

To compare mean corneal keratometry (Km), central corneal thickness (CCT), anterior chamber depth (ACD) and axial length (AL) measurements using rotating Scheimpflug imaging combined with partial coherence interferometry (Pentacam AXL) and optical low-coherence reflectometry (Allegro Biograph).

Setting:

Oftalvist CIO Jerez. Jerez de la Frontera. Spain.

Methods:

Three different measurements of Km, CCT, ACD and AL were taken using the new Pentacam AXL (Oculus, Wetzlar, Germany) and the Allegro Biograph (Wavelight, Erlangen, Germany) in patients with cataract. Measurement correlation and agreement between devices by the Bland-Altman plot were evaluated.

Results:

Mean values obtained with Pentacam AXL and Biograph were respectively as follows: Km was 43.27±1.52 and 43.31±1.50 D; CCT was 544.0±26.7 and 548.7±28.9 µm (p<0.001); ACD was 2.58±0.40 and 2.62±0.36 mm; AL was 23.64±1.40 and 23.66±1.42 mm. High correlation was found for all measurements between Pentacam AXL and Biograph. Both instruments exhibited good agreement in terms of Km, CCT, ACD and AL values, but wide 95% limits of agreements between devices were found.

Conclusions:

The new Pentacam AXL showed similar values to those for Allegro Biograph in patients with cataract. Despite the high correlation between devices, both devices are not interchangeable in measuring the biometric data of the eye.
