Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate the feasibility and accuracy of measuring axial length (AL) by a new optical low-coherence reflectometry (OLCR)-based device in eyes with central posterior subcapsular cataract (PSC).

Setting:

Assaf-Harofeh Medical Center, Zerifin, Israel.

Methods:

Retrospective case series. We enrolled consecutive cases of eyes that had undergone uneventful cataract surgery and whose preoperative AL measurements were not feasible with the partial coherence interferometry (PCI) device due to a central PSC cataract. Preoperative AL was measured by the OCLR device and immersion ultrasound biometry (US). Those preoperative results were compared to the postoperative AL measurements obtained by the PCI device.

Results:

Twenty-seven eyes of 27 adult patients were enrolled in the study. The correlation between the OLCR and the PCI and between the US and the PCI AL measurements were r=0.999 and r=0.947, respectively (both P<.0001). The median difference between the OLCR and the PCI AL measurements (0.07mm) was lower than the median difference between the US and the PCI AL measurements (0.13mm), P=.016. The proportion of eyes with an AL difference of less than 0.1mm was higher between the OCLR and the PCI devices (88.9%, 24 eyes) than between the US and the PCI devices (33.3%, 9 eyes), P=.001.

Conclusions:

The OLCR-based device successfully measured the preoperative AL in all eyes with central PSC for which preoperative PCI scans were not feasible. These measurements correlated well with the postoperative AL measurements obtained by the PCI device.
