Abstract Details

Purpose:

We present the development of an open online database (IOLCon) for the continuous and automated optimization and compilation of intraocular lens (IOL) constants for cataract surgery. The concept of IOLCon as an encyclopedic database for IOL specifications is evolving in cooperation with manufacturers of IOLs and biometry devices as well as with cataract surgeons from all around the world. The purpose of the current study was to develop a fully functional demonstration version.

Methods:

The platform is based on a PostgreSQL database system. The user-interface and the optimization algorithms were programmed in the Hypertext Preprocessor (PHP) language. Optimization algorithms for published IOL formulas (SRK II, SRK/T, Haigis, HofferQ, Holladay 1) were implemented. Data entry is possible for two user groups: 1) IOL manufacturers and distributors can enter technical data for their intraocular lens products, 2) Surgeons can upload pre-and postoperative refractive results for subsequent IOL constant optimization. Additionally, we defined an interface for biometry devices to enable a standardized data exchange.

Results:

Technical IOL data entry requires registration through an authorized staff from the IOL manufacturer or IOL distributor. The graphical user interface provides a tabular listing of IOL specifications and nominal as well as optimized IOL constants. A search option allows filtering according to various criteria (e.g. manufacturer, material, optic size). Registered surgeons are able to upload pre- and postoperative measurements via open text file formats. Uploaded files can contain results of different IOLs, devices or ethnicities. Surgical results are used for personal and global IOL constant optimization. Personalized constants can be downloaded in the open Extensible Markup Language (XML) format.

Conclusions:

IOLCon is an open platform with versatile options for IOL constant optimization. The database is not bound to specific devices, IOL manufacturers or surgeons. Surgeons may upload refractive results of cataract surgery for creating personalized constants. Global constants can be derived for specific biometry devices or ethnicities, which are based on community data. In the near future IOLCon will be available for rapid worldwide dissemination of optimized IOL constants.
