Abstract Details

Purpose:

To assess the characteristics of tube ligation status after Ahmed glaucoma valve implantation using anterior segment optical coherence tomography (AS-OCT)

Setting:

CHA Bundang Medical Center, CHA University

Methods:

A total of 23 refractory glaucoma eyes underwent Ahmed glaucoma valve in CHA Bundang Medical Center was retrospectively enrolled. Tube was ligated with 7-0 Vicryl in between 2 and 4 mm apart from the plate and covered by a 4 x 4 mm sized right-angled triangle shape scleral flap. The maintenance of the tube ligation was confirmed when the shadowing of the thread or the narrowing / bending of the tube was noted.

Results:

The maintenance of the tube ligation was noted in 20, 14, and 7 eyes after 1, 2, and 3 months, respectively. The average inner diameters of the tube were and 66 ± 56 μm and 299 ± 12 μm with the ligation maintained and the ligation not maintained, respectively.

Conclusions:

The tensile strength of Vicryl is generally known to be about 50% after 3 weeks and it is fully degraded after 2 months in vivo. However, the AS-OCT images showed that the tube ligation was maintained up to 3 months postoperatively in some cases. This finding could explain the frequency of hypo- or hyper-tensive cases.
