Abstract Details

Purpose:

The aqueous humor has inhibitory effect to the growth of lens epithelial cells (LECs). Using this characteristics, we may prevent posterior capsular opacification (PCO). In this study, the intraocular lens (IOL) optics were improved, and the inhibitory effects to posterior cataract opacification (PCO) were examined in vivo.

Setting:

Department of Ophthalmology, Dokkyo Medical University, Tochigi, Japan.

Methods:

AF-1 (VA-60BB HOYA) based IOLs were prepared and 2 holes (2.5 mm away from the center in the area of ⌀ 0.55mm) were opened. And 0.1 mm thickness of concentric circles grooves were placed anterior and posterior optics consistent with holes (S-IOL). Japanese white rabbits of 8-week-old, were anesthetized and performed cataract surgery from 2.4mm corneal incision. And the S-IOL or no treated IOL (control) were implanted. At 1, 3 and 5 weeks postoperatively, PCO were observed using slit lamp microscope and EAS-1000. After observations, paraffin sections were stained using hematoxylin and eosin.

Results:

Development of LECs were observed using control IOL; however, the development were prevented using the S-IOL. The thickness of lens epithelial cells of posterior capsules are 99.1 micrometer in the control IOL and 14.6 micrometer in the S-IOL.

Conclusions:

The shape innovation of IOLs is one of an effective choices to prevent PCO for future IOLs.
