Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate the effect of an capsular tension ring (CTR) in preventing complications during and after cataract surgery

Setting:

State Institution 'Zaporizhzhya Medical Academy of Postgraduate Education Ministry of Public Health of Ukraine'

Methods:

We retrospectively studied 17 eyes of 16 patients with dislocation of the entire capsular bag containing the IOL, who went to the clinic in 2016 year. Gender, age, interval between original surgery and IOL dislocation, peculiarity of the phacoemulsification and the predisposing factors were examined

Results:

The mean age of the patients with IOL dislocation was 67.2 years (range 53–82), males 10 (62.5%), females 6 (37.5). All the patients had predisposing risk factors: pseudoexfoliation syndrome with lens subluxation 12 eyes, high myopia 2 eyes, advanced glaucoma 3 eyes. The surgery was performed without complications in all cases, CTR was used in 12 eyes (70.6%). The mean interval between cataract surgery and IOL dislocation ranged between 1.5 to 6.5 years. Several mechanism of IOL dislocation were revealed: capsular bag contraction 5 eyes (without CTR inserted), neodymium: YAG laser posterior capsulotomy 4 eyes, PES and zonular failure 8 eyes.

Conclusions:

Implantation of the capsular ring allowed to avoid intraoperative complications, the development of fibrosis of the capsular bag but it was insufficient to prevent the late dislocation of the IOL.
