Abstract Details

Purpose:

To compare conventional tests for binocular vision and oculomotricity with their adaptation on a new digital orthoptic platform Binoculus© from Orthoptica® . Orthoptica was born from a collaboration between IMT-Atlantique engineering school, the LaTIM Inserm UMR 1101 research laboratories and the Ophthalmology department of Brest University Hospital (France).

Setting:

University Brest Hospital Research laboratories in Medical Imaging LATIM Inserm UMR 1101

Methods:

102 subjects were enrolled in this study. We focus on three tests: Wirt test, the measurement of horizontal and vertical phorias, and the horizontal fusional amplitude in convergence and divergence. These tests were performed either with the standard orthoptic tests (setback distance 0.4, 1.5 and 4 meters) and the digital one (1.5 meters). The platform combines a computer with a specific software, a video-projector and crystal-liquid 3D glasses.

Results:

Results demonstrate a nice correlation for the Wirt test (Spearman coefficient : Rho = 0,74 ; p < 0,0001), phoria measurement does not show significant difference in intermediate and distance vision (Paired Student test ; p = 0,46 and p = 0,51). No significant statistical difference in convergence and divergence for distance vision was noticed concerning fusion amplitude (Paired Student test; p = 0,34 et p = 0,94). Patient cooperation appears more interactive and more convivial in numerical immersion.

Conclusions:

This digital platform of 3D tests for binocular vision and oculomotricity could favorably replace classical tests in modernizing this evaluation in our daily practice. The use of connected tools is more suitable to the current conditions of patients’ lives and to the conditions of work of the ophthalmologist, orthoptist and optometrist. Soon, most of conventional tests should switch to this numerical format and some new ones could be added.
