Abstract Details
Purpose:
Comparatively evaluate corneal epithelial remodeling with OCTem.
Setting:
Laservision.gr Clinical and Research Institute, Athens, Greece.
Methods:
In 22 consecutive patients (44 eyes), one eye randomized to have LASIK, and the contralateral: Smile. We evaluated perioperative acuity and refraction (SE), along with OCTem at 1 week, 1, 3 and 6 months.
Results:
Refractive data were slightly better with LASIK and reported elsewhere. Both procedures resulted in similar epithelial thickness and variability increases in most of the central 6mm corneal surface. They were significantly different though in the 2-5mm paracentral zone: LASIK showed higher increase in mean thickness within this zone than Smile: 6.11±3.80μm to 4.37±3.44μm and higher variability: 2.80±1.0μm to 2.23±0.97μm respectively (P<0.05).
Conclusions:
LASIK appears to affect significantly the paracentral (2-5mm) OCTem when compared to contralateral eye Smile. This difference may derive from their corresponding difference in corneal nerve plexus injury.
