Purpose:
To report a case with perfluoro-n-octane (PFO) in anterior chamber since 2005 with no significant ocular effect
Setting:

Methods:
Retrospective, noncomparative case report with retained intraocular PFO after retinal detachment repair
Results:
A case of a young male who underwent scleral buckle, pars plana vitrectomy with PFO after retinal detachment. In the immediate postoperative period, PFO was in the anterior chamber, despite the fact that the patient had an intact lens, without subluxation or phacodonesis. The patient decided to maintain an expectant attitude, rejecting any surgical intervention until the present moment. Periodic follow-up were performed, currently showing a visual acuity of 0.8. Slit lamp examination revealed a posterior subcapsular cataract and 50% of anterior chamber filled of PFO, keeping a transparent cornea with an endothelial count of 2651 cell density / mm2
Conclusions:
The use of PFO is frequently used as a tool in vitreoretinal surgery, occasionally being retained in the vitreous cavity. Being able to go to the anterior chamber, usually in situations of pseudophakia or zonular deficiencies.
The presence of PFO in the anterior chamber can be well tolerated, despite the evidence of some animal studies and some published case. As can be observed in this case with the longer follow-up described, an expectant attitude can be an option in this type of complications. However, strict monitoring is recommended to rule out any signs of toxicity
