Abstract Details

Purpose:

To asses about refractive status and ocular safety two years after performing lens removal (LR) and implanting trifocal intraocular lenses in a population of high myopic eyes.

Setting:

Refractive Surgery Department. Clinica Baviera, Spain

Methods:

Cumulative retrospective study that includes 205 eyes consecutively treated with LR and which received LISA TRI 839 ZEISS intraocular lens to treat cataracts or myopic astigmatism and presbyopia. Axial length was longer than 26 mm in all eyes. Visual outcomes and complications were evaluated two years after surgeries.

Results:

LogMAR distance corrected visual acuities (DCVA) improved from 0.13 ± 0.1 to 0.06 ± 0.1 at 3 months after procedures (Kruskal-Wallis, p< 0.01) and remained stable 12 and 24 months later (Kruskal-Wallis, p> 0.05). Spherical equivalent varied from -7.75 ± 4.03 D preoperatively to -0,13±0,60 D, -0,10 ±0,39 D, -0,25±0,53 D at three, twelve and twenty-four months respectively. No intraoperative complications were reported. Posterior capsule opacification was the commonest postoperative incidence (27.31%). Retinal detachment (RD) was diagnosed in 6 eyes (2.92%), being five of them under 52 years (OR=7.92; Chi-square, p<0.05). No correlation was found between RD incidence and Nd-YAG capsulotomy.

Conclusions:

Visual outcomes after implanting trifocal IOLs in high myopic eyes are excellent. The rate of RD is considerably high even in absence of intraoperative incidences.
