Abstract Details

Purpose:

To compare two optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) systems adapted for anterior segment imaging in eyes with corneal vascularisation.

Setting:

Singapore National Eye Centre

Methods:

Prospective, observational study of subjects with corneal vascularization had OCTA scans performed using commercially available systems i.e. split-spectrum amplitude decorrelation algorithm angiography system (SSADA, AngioVue; Optovue Inc., USA), and spectral-domain OCTA (Angioscan; Nidek Co. Ltd, Japan). Measurements such as signal strength, vessel density and repeatability between OCTA systems were compared.

Results:

The median age of patients was 49 (23–72) years. We obtained substantial repeatability in terms of image quality score (κ=0.86) for all OCTA scans (10 eyes, 40 scans), with a mean score of 2.4±1.0 for the SD OCTA system, and 2.8±0.5 for the SSADA OCTA system (P=0.142). The mean vessel density measured by SSADA OCTA system was reported to be significantly greater than to the values measured by SD OCTA system (20.3 ± 4.9 % vs 15.1 ± 4.2 %, p<0.001).

Conclusions:

We found promising evidence that two rapid, non-contact OCTA systems may successfully delineate vessels in the anterior segment. The vessel density measurements of the SSADA OCTA was found to be significantly greater than that measured with the SD OCTA. Further prospective studies are required to confirm if this relatively new imaging technique may be used for vessel quantification and serial imaging.
