Purpose:
To investigate the relationship between the clinical severity and viral quantitative load detected by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) in adenoviral keratoconjunctivitis.
Setting:
Cukurova University Faculty of Medicine, Ophthalmology and Virology Departments
Methods:
Conjunctival swab samples were taken for real-time PCR analysis from patients with clinically suspected adenoviral conjunctivitis.
Patients were divided into two groups as low positive (<100,000 copies) (Group 1) and high positive (> 1,000,000 copies) (Group 2) according to the number of DNA copies detected. The two groups were compared in terms of clinical features.
Results:
Twenty-nine eyes of 29 patients (17 female, 12 male), 8 in Group 1 and 21 in Group 2 were included in the study. The mean age was 36 16 ranged from 1 to 73 years.
Clinical findings in Group 1 and 2 were; eyelid edema %75 and %90, chemosis %25 and %67, conjunctival hemorrhage 71% and 100%, conjunctival follicles 63% and 71%, pseudomembran 38% and 62%, punctate keratopathy 50% and 57%, corneal subepithelial deposit % 25 and 48% respectively.
Conclusions:
In this study, it was observed that the clinical presentation was more severe in cases with a high virus load. For these severe cases contagiousness may be more likely, so preventive measurements should be keep in mind.
