Purpose:
To evaluate the relation between the treated optical zone with the high order aberration change in small incision lenticule extraction.
Setting:
Department of Ophthalmology, Selcuk University
Methods:
70 eyes of 37 patients who had small incision lenticule extraction (SMILE) surgery were included in this retrospective study All patients had complete ophthalmic examination and high order aberration evaluation with Sirius (CSO, Florance, Italy) corneal topography, before and one month after the surgery. The treated optical zone was noted and the correlation between the optical zone and postoperative high order aberration changes was evaluated statistically (SPSS 18.0 Inc).
Results:
The mean treated optical zone was 6.26±18 mm. The mean postoperative OPD difference was -0.15 ±0.69 and was not correlated with optical zone. The mean HOA, coma and spherical aberration differences were 0.18±0.35, 0.08±0.23 and 0.07±0.21, respectively. The change in these last three aberrations was negatively correlated with the optical zone, however this change was not statistically significant (p>0.05 in all).
Conclusions:
The increase in aberrations is not very significant in small incision lenticule extraction even though the treated optical zone gets smaller.
