Abstract Details
Purpose:
Improve the functional capacity and independence of the visually impaired by transforming Liquid opticsTM interface of Catalys®, which would be discarded, for visual rehabilitation as a low-cost optical resource. Therefore, contributing to the environmental sustainability and social inclusion of patients with low vision and low income.
Setting:
Irmandade Santa Casa de Misericórdia de São Paulo.
Methods:
Patients with low vision and who never used magnifying lens were selected to participate in the current prospective study. They were trained for 1 month with the Liquid opticsTM interface of Catalys® as magnifying lens, which was fitted with a holder made of recyclable material from the top of a transparent PET bottle with 11.5 centimeter height. It was evaluated by a questionnaire identified as National Eye Institute-Visual Function Questionnaire-25 (NIV VFQ-25) and the MNREAD® test adapted to Portuguese. They were applied by the author in two distinct moments, before and after training, with and without the optical resource.
Results:
Ten patients were evaluated, being 7 women and 3 men. All with subnormal vision and different diagnoses (advanced glaucoma, Neovascular age-related macular degeneration, retinitis pigmentosa and proliferative diabetic retinopathy). The mean age was 56.9 ± 19.12 years.
The difference, with and without the optical resource, of Reading parameters of patients examined by MNREAD, after training were: maximum reading speed (MRS), 8.90 ± 14.98 words per min.; critical print size (CPS), 0.24 ± 0.16 logMAR; reading acuity (RA), 0.28 ± 0.14 log MAR. Furthemore, the variation of NIV VFQ-25 in first and second moments was 13.13 ± 5,01 score points.
Conclusions:
Low vision deteriotes the quality of life by making simple daily activities, such as reading, more difficult and complex to be done. The Liquid opticsTM interface of Catalys® as optical resource increased the reading parameters, quantitatively, and reflected in improvement of the total score of NIV VFQ-25. In addition, it was recycled, giving another funcion to what was considered hospital waste.
