Purpose:
To analyze prevalence of astigmatism in patients undergoing cataract surgery and to assess relationship with age with reference for needs of intraocular correction.
Setting:
Hospital of Lithuanian University of Health Sciences Kauno klinikos, Department of Ophthalmology
Methods:
From January 1, 2017 till March 1, 2017 retrospective cross-sectional study was held in Hospital of Lithuanian University of Health Sciences Kauno klinikos, Department of Ophthalmology. Outpatient case histories were analyzed before the cataract surgery. Collected data: demographics; magnitude of astigmatism; orientation of corneal astigmatism - with-the-rule(WTR), against-the-rule(ATR), oblique(OB). WTR astigmatism was defined when steep curvature was [60-120] degrees, ATR [0-30] and [150-180], OB-(30-60) and (120-150) degrees. Basic characteristics are presented in percentage, means ± standard deviation. Comparisons were made by using Chi square tests for qualitative variables. p < 0.05 level was considered to be statistically significant.
Results:
502 eyes were analyzed. Demographics: 35,5% men eyes, 64,5% - women, mean age 71,68±9,77 years (y). Distribution of age groups: ≤60y – 14,2%, [61-70]y – 20%, [71-80]y – 45,2%, >80y–20,6%. Mean corneal astigmatism was 0,8±0,74 diopters (D). Distribution of astigmatism groups: 0D – 10,2%, (0-1]D – 66,2%, (1-2]D – 16%, >2D – 7,6%. Corneal astigmatism above 1.0D was significantly more common in younger patients group (≤60y – 42,3% vs 24% in [61-70]y; 18,6% in [71-80]y and 21,3% in >80y). Mean axis of astigmatism was 71,98±60,85. WTR astigmatism was found in 26,9% of patients, ATR – 56,9%, OB – 16,2%.
Conclusions:
About one fourth of cataract surgery patients had corneal astigmatism more than 1.0D, which was more common for younger patients. ATR astigmatism was the most common among corneal astigmatisms. This study data could be used for planning local demands for implantation of toric lenses to achieve optimal postoperative visual results.
