Abstract Details
Purpose:
Myopic FemtoLASIK is gaining increased popularity, due to the advantages of the flap thickness and architecture. Retreatment procedures may also differ as far as surgical approach and outcome. Our purpose was to evaluate results of retreatment of residual refractive errors following myopic FemtoLASIK with femtosecond laser flaps.
Setting:
Enaim Refractive Surgery Center
Methods:
A retrospective review was performed on consecutive cases of myopic FemtoLASIK during 2004-2014. Data was retrieved on all consecutive eyes that underwent enhancement for correction of residual refractive errors after myopic FemtoLASIK. Data included: age, gender, initial and pre-enhancement refractive errors, methods of enhancement, follow-up period, intra- or postoperative complications. Analysis of visual outcomes, safety and efficacy of the enhancements were performed for the entire enhancement group as well as for each enhancement method separately
Results:
119 consecutive eyes (109 patients) were enhanced 27.9 ± 28.7 mo. after the initial operation. The techniques were: flap lift in 62.2%, surface ablation in 37% and recut in 1 eye. Flap lift was achieved in 70/74 (94.6%); postoperatively mucin appeared in 2 eyes (one required refloat), ingrowth appeared in 5 eyes (progressive in one eye requiring re-lift). No significant complications occurred in the surface ablation eyes. No significant difference was found in efficacy and safety.
Conclusions:
Enhancements after myopic FemtoLASIK are safe and effective and showed a favorable outcome. No complications were observed in the surface ablation group. Although surface ablation may show a limitation in the possible enhancement ablation depth, this method should be considered for enhancement late after the primary FemtoLASIK. The analysis of the enhancement outcomes after myopic FemtoLASIK may provide guidelines for future decision making.
