Abstract Details
Purpose:
To determine visual function outcomes and patient’s satisfaction following cataract extraction surgery with implantation of an extended range of vision intraocular lens (IOL).
Setting:
Ein-Tal Eye Center, Tel Aviv, Israel.
Methods:
Consecutive cases of patients, who underwent cataract extraction with implantation of an extended range of vision IOL with manifest refraction at least 1 month postoperative reviewed. Follow up interviews conducted to assess patient’s satisfaction and side effects. Results of patients with retinal pathologies, relative contraindications for multifocal IOLs, and without contraindications for multifocal IOLs were compared.
Results:
97 eyes of 60 patients were included. Of them, 55 of 60 patients answered the questioners. The mean postoperative uncorrected distant, intermediate and near visual acuities (LogMAR) were 0.064±0.103, 0.057±0.128, and 0.290±0.132 (no multifocal contraindications); 0.092±0.120, 0.070±0.108, and 0.272±0.149 (multifocal relative contraindications); and 0.090±0.103, 0.121±0.129, and 0.307±0.180 (retinal pathology), respectively. Sixty percent of the patients reported to be spectacle independent. 24.4% of patients reported visual disturbance due to postoperative halos and/or glares. 78.2% would recommend implantation of this IOL. No statistically significant differences were found between the groups.
Conclusions:
The extended range of vision IOL demonstrated excellent distant and intermediate uncorrected visual results with good near uncorrected visual results in a non-selective population, including patients with relative and contraindication for multifocal IOL. Although, patients may experience some visual problems, such as glare or haloes, overall patient’s satisfaction was high.
