Abstract Details
Purpose:
The aim of this study was to analyze corneal microstructural changes following phacoemulsification of cataract with intraocular lens insertion in patients with exfoliation syndrome (XFS) using in vivo confocal microscopy (IVCM).
Setting:
Hacettepe University School of Medicine, Department of Ophthalmology
Methods:
Twenty corneas of patients with XFS and 20 corneas of age-matched control subjects undergoing cataract surgery were included in this prospective study. Basal epithelial cell, endothelial cell densities, and sub-basal nerves were evaluated using IVCM preoperatively and 6 months after the cataract extraction. Student’s t-test and Mann Whitney-U Test, and Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test were used for statistical evaluations.
Results:
There was no significant difference in terms of age and gender between two groups (p=0.086, P=0.345, respectively). In addition, there was no statistically significant changes in epithelial cell density (p=0.285, 0.101, respectively), sub-basal nerve density (p=0.327, p=0.575, respectively), and endothelial cell density (p=0.308, p=0.128, respectively), as well as endothelial pleomorphism (p=0.339, p=0.111, respectively) and polimegetism (p=0.401, p=0.445, respectively) in both XFS and control groups between preoperatively and 6-month postoperatively.
Conclusions:
No microstructural changes were identified in patients with XFS who had undergone cataract surgery.
