Therapeutic lamellar keratoplasty in patients with limbal dermoid

Abstract Details

Purpose:

To report the efficasy of the surgical procedure of lamelar keratoplasty used in 9 consecutive case of of nine patients (out of 31 patients) with limbar dermoid hsitological proven. We evaluated the results based on cosmetic appearance, visual acquity and the survival of the graft.

Setting:

Ophthalmology Clinic Regional Universitary Hospital Durres

Methods:

Methods and materials: 31 patients: 19 females and 12 males. The left eye was involved in 18 cases(eyes) and the right eye in 7 cases. 6 (six) cases were bilateral. Age of the patients varied from 1 month to 48 years. The patients had a full preop.evaluation. The follow up of the patients varied from 6 months to 120 months. Visual acquity was taken form all patients when possible before and after the surgery

Results:

Results:Lamellar keratoplasty was performed in 9 pacients. Good cosmetic appearance was achived in 18 cases (eyes). The graft remained clear in 10 eyes and in 13 there was a mild haze. The astigmatisem which the patients had before the surgery did not change after it. BCVA did not have any alteration because of the surgical procedures.

Conclusions:

Conclusion: Limbar dermoids are a sgnificant cause of visual impairment. The surgical procedure of the lamellar keratoplasty is a safe procedure and effective which gives a very good results with satisfying cosmetic appearance. It also gporvides good visual result, With this surgical procedures it can be optimally use a graft which is not suitable for PK (Penetrative keratoplasty)
