Abstract Details
Purpose:
to report the complications observed in a consecutive large series of cases treated with keratopigmentation (KTP).
Setting:
Vissum Alicante, Spain.
Methods:
KTP was performed in 234 eyes (204 patients) for cosmetic therapeutic, functional therapeutic or purely cosmetic reasons. From them 50 eyes of 29 patients suffered complications. Superficial automated KTP, Femtosecond assisted KTP using a single tunnel technique or a double tunnel technique and Manual intralamellar KTP were the techniques used with three different and consecutive generations of pigments. The follow-up period ranged from 4 months to 12 years. Complications were divided into organic and functional. Photophobia, visual field limitations and magnetic resonance images alterations were considered functional complications. Organic complications were described as change in color, color vanishing, and neovascularization.
Results:
Between the years 2002 and 2016, the percentage of complications among all the KTP procedures was 12.82 %. Mostly, patients complained of photophobia- 49%, then color vanishing and change in color- 19% each. Neovascularization, VF limitations and MRI complications constituted 7%, 4% and 2% respectively. Organic complications were observed with the previous GP but overcome with the last 3rd CE mark GP. Though with the latter pigments photophobia was still detected, it gradually disappeared in most of the patients (81.81%) 6 months postoperatively.
Conclusions:
KTP with 3rd GP is a modern, minimally invasive, well-tolerated and safe technique that helps in solving several functional ocular problems and in improving the confidence and self-esteem of the patients with their cosmetic appearance.
