Purpose:
To evaluate the therapeutic efficacy of Intensed Pulse Light (IPL) treatmennt in blepharitis patients with rosacea who are not responsive to conventional therapy.
Setting:
Hangil Eye Hospital, Incheon, Republic of Korea
Methods:
We applied IPL treatment 4 times every 3 weeks on the lower eyelid margin of blepharitis patients with rosacea who did not respond to conventional therapy. The symptomatic change and subjective improvement were investigated with OSDI and SPEED test before and after procedure. BUT, keratoconjunctival erosion status(Oxford scale), the degree of blepharitis(e.g. eyelid swelling, hyperemia, meibomian gland function) were also evaluated. The lipid layer thickness of tearfilm was measured by Lipiview II and the change before and after the procedure were compared. Meibomian secretory function was evaluated by the number of meibomian gland secreted by Korb Meibomian Gland EvaluatorTM.
Results:
32 patients underwent IPL treatment and their mean age was 56.2 years old. BUT (3.6±1.0sec→5.2±1.1sec), OSDI (56.0±18.5→24.3±16.8), SPEED (15.2±4.1→6.8±3.6) after IPL treatment were significantly improved(p<0.05). 94% of the patients appealed subjective symptomatic improvement. The clinical features of eyelid margin, keratoconjunctival erosion improved. The number of secreted meibomian gland increased from 4.9±2.9 to 10.2±1.9 significantly(p<0.05). The lipid layer thickness before and after treatment did not show significant change. There were no side effects after the treatment except redness and pain of lid margin in one patient,which regressed spontaneously.
Conclusions:
IPL treatment showed significant therapeutic efficacy in blepharitis patients with rosacea who did not respond to the conventional therapy. Thus IPL treatment is considered a safe and effective treatment for blepharitis related to rosacea.
