Abstract Details
Purpose:
To compare two groups of patients with pterygium treated with: standard technique of LCAP and sutureless technique of LCAP with fibrin glue.
Setting:
University Eye Hospital “Prof. Pashev”
Methods:
Prospective interventional study of patients with pterygium treated by LCAP from the same eye. Patients were divided into two groups according to the surgical technique: a first group - with standard LCAP and a second group - with sutureless LCAP fixing the transplant by commercially available fibrin glue. Patients were followed for 2 to 24 months (Jan 2015- Jan 2017)
Results:
The first group of 11 patients were operated with standard LCAP and a second of 17 - with sutureless LCAP. Epithelialization of the cornea is comparable between the two groups, average 3 days. Patients in the first group reported more subjective complaints in the first 14 days: irritation, redness and epiphora. These complains lasted for average 5 days in patients of the second group. Objective signs of inflammation were more pronounced in patients with standard surgery: symptomatic ptosis, conjunctival chemosis, hyperemia and photophobia. There were no recurrence of pterygium and other complications during the follow-up in all patients.
Conclusions:
The sutureless LCAP with fibrin glue is comparable with the standard LCAP but patients have less subjective complaints. As a result of our study we would recommend the use of fibrin glue for LCAP.
