Purpose:
To evaluate the effectiveness of the Barrett Universal II and ray-tracing assisted Olsen formulas for eyes of longer axial lengths (ALs).
Setting:
Miyata Eye Hospital, Miyazaki, Japan.
Methods:
Sixty-five eyes of 47 patients with AL longer than 26.0mm underwent cataract surgery with intraocular lens implantation. Predicted postoperative refractions were obtained with SRK/T, Barrett Universal II, and ray-tracing assisted Olsen (PhacoOptics®) formulas with biometry measurements using the Lenstar LS 900 (Haag-Streit AG). Their refractive errors from manifest refraction 1 month postoperatively were calculated. The influences of AL on refractive errors were also evaluated.
Results:
The mean AL was 27.91mm (range 26.3 to 30.03mm). The mean prediction error with the uses of SRK/T, Barrett Universal II and Olsen formulas were 0.43D, 0.32D and 0.21D, respectively, and the Olsen was least (P<0.001). There were 52.3%, 66.2% and 70.8% within ±0.5D of errors, and 92.3%, 96.9% and 96.9% within ±1.0D, respectively. The ±0.5D of errors in the Olsen was significantly higher than the SRK/T (P<0.05). The refractive errors increased with AL in the use of the SRK/T (P=0.027, R2=0.083), however, there were no association with the Barrett Universal II and Olsen.
Conclusions:
Barrett Universal II and Olsen formulas were effective for AL longer than 26mm.
