Purpose:
To evaluate the occurrence of late in the bag intraocular lens (IOL) subluxation after uneventful phacoemulsification cataract surgery in patients with uveitis
Setting:
Istanbul Education And Research Hospital Ophthalmology Clinic, Istanbul. Turkey
Methods:
Six eyes (5 patients) with uveitis which underwent uneventful phacoemulsification and IOL implantation were enrolled in this retrospective study. In the bag IOL subluxation was diagnosed following a routine dilated examination that demonstrated mild pseudophacodonesis. Male-Female ratio was 2/3, mean age was 47.5±15.9 years
(24-58).
Results:
Mean time interval from cataract surgery to subluxation was 82.4±9.38 months. Two patients had sarcoidosis, one had Behcet’ uveitis, one had Toxoplasmosis chorioretinitis and one had Fuchs’ uveitis syndrome. There was late in the bag IOL subluxation in both eyes of a patient with sarkoidosis. IOL subluxation of all patients were displaced inferiorly. Mean BCVA of patients was 0.42±0.45 logMAR. All patients have been managed conservatively due to tolerable symptoms.
Conclusions:
In the bag IOL subluxation is an uncommon and late complication after uneventful cataract surgery in patients with uveitis. This complication depends on progressive zonular weakness that can be related to the inflammation or zonular stress that can occur postoperative capsular fibrosis. Conservative management may be appropriate in patients with tolerable symptoms
