Abstract Details
Purpose:
Fundus imaging with smartphone and direct ophthalmoscope without using any other equipments.
Setting:
Mahatma Gandhi Medical College & Research Institute,Pondicherry,India - casuality clinic & remote camps.
Methods:
A smartphone and a direct ophthalmoscope are used to examine the patients in sitting or lying position with undilated or dilated pupils.Fundus photographs and videographs are taken with iPhone 5 and a direct ophthalmoscope. The back camera of the smartphone is kept in contact with the observing hole of the direct ophthalmoscope and adjusted such that, when the ophthalmoscope and camera are turned on,the whole circle of light from ophthalmoscope is seen on the screen.Keeping the smartphone in the video mode, fundus is recorded to the maximum extent. The areas of interest are focussed and still images are extracted from the video clip.
Results:
Fundus images documentation done with smartphone and direct ophthalmoscope with reasonable quality, low cost, without the use of fundus camera and other equipments.
Conclusions:
This method aids in imaging and documenting the fundus with a reasonable quality without a fundus camera.Smartphones allow storing, magnifying and sharing images for cross consultatation. This method avoids the discomforting proximity of the examiner to the patient. We find this technique to be more useful for nonambulatory patients,in children for examination under anaesthesia, patients who cannot sit at the fundus camera.
