Comparison between central corneal thickness measurements with a standard ultrasound and optical pachymetry

Abstract Details

Purpose:

To compare the precision of central corneal thickness (CCT) measurements taken with the handheld ultrasound pachymeter (USP) and the optical (OP) to verify its reliability, precision and predictability.

Setting:

Ultrasound pachymetry measurements were performed after the eyes were anesthetised with one drop of 0.4% oxybuprocaine hydrochloride. Three measurements were obtained (initial, stromal-pre-lasik-ablation and post-lasik-ablation) but we only included the stromal-pre-lasik-ablation due to the other two were affected by surgery factors.

Methods:

In this prospective study, 79 eyes of 43 healthy patients undergoing LASIK surgery in Clinica Baviera Valladolid were included in the study. CCT measurements were obtained using Ultrasonic pachymeter DGH-5100 Topcon and optic pachymeter WaveLight EX-500. The results were evaluated using the computer program Statgraphics and the T- test.

Results:

The average CCT (± standard deviation) was 478,7 ± 25.6 μm and 474.2 ± 23.7 μm for USP and OP respectively. The P value for the means difference is P =0.25 with an IC 95% (Confidence interval), the T-test revealed no statistically difference between USP and OP (P > 0.05).

Conclusions:

No difference was found in the measurements for the total central pachymetry. The two systems are reliable and precise tools for the measurement of stromal thickness, and helpful for refractive surgery.
